Hair Replacement Surgery for Women

Hair loss is common for both genders, yet it can be more traumatic when it comes to self-esteem and confidence for women. While men may not enjoy losing hair – it is frustrating for both genders – the emotional toll for women tends to be greater. Thinning upon the top of the scalp is the most common type of female hair loss, creating noticeable bald patches that are difficult to hide. Hair replacement surgery can offer relief, giving women with this condition back their confidence and improving their self-esteem.

Follicle Unit Transfer or Extraction Surgery

Depending on the type of hair loss or the extent of thinning, either follicle unit transfer (FUI) or follicle unit extraction (FUE) can be used in hair replacement surgery for women. These methods are an improved medical option compared to previous strip transplants that involved larger incisions and more stitches. The individual hair follicles can be harvested from other areas of the scalp and transplanted to the thinning areas, but less scarring occurs, and the recovery time is quicker than outdated hair transplant methods.

Another advancement in hair transplant surgeries is the use of platelet-rich plasma or PRP. Extracting plasma from the patient’s own blood through a centrifuge can help improve the healing process. PRP is injected into the surgical sites, helping heal the wounds to the scalp quicker and stimulating hair growth.

Hair loss and thinning can be devastating for women, but it is not without treatment options. FUE and FUI hair replacement surgeries can offer a solution that can create natural, thicker hair and restore a woman’s self-confidence in her appearance. This medical procedure is available through top plastic surgeons in the country, giving many women a chance to restore their beautiful hair and look their best at any age.

How to Choose the Right-Sized Breast Augmentation

Choosing to undergo breast augmentation surgery is a very personal decision. Even more personalized is deciding the size and shape of the breasts you desire. What is appropriate for one person is not right for another – it all depends on your personal preference, build, age and other factors. Here are a few things to consider for finding the right size for your breast augmentation.

What Is the Desired Effect?

If you just want a more balanced appearance due to smaller natural breasts, going up to a “B” or “C” cup may be all you need. However, for those that want a more voluptuous appearance, bigger may be better. Just keep in mind that larger breasts can attract attention and may have issues you did not consider, such as clothing fit and back problems.

What Is Your Frame and Body Type?

A “D” or “DD” cup will look different on a small-framed person than a larger-framed person. Breast sizes are not “one-size-fits-all” and just because someone you know looks fabulous at a “DD” does not mean it is right for you. Slimmer builds or small frames may be better suited to a “C” and look larger.

Pregnancy, Age and Other Factors

Keep in mind your age and whether you will have children in the future can impact your breasts. Women who have children may go up in breast size and then shrink after. Weight gain and loss can also impact breast size – if you are planning to lose weight, it could affect your long-term breast size.

The best way to choose the right-sized breast augmentation is to have a honest discussion with your plastic surgeon. Make sure to consider all the factors to make the right choice to assure you will be happy with the long-term results.

Top 5 Plastic Surgeries for Men

Looking good and feeling confident is not only desired by women; men also care about their appearance and want to look their best at any age. Plastic surgery was once mostly pursued by women, but men are closing the gap in recent years. Whether they want to look younger or just want to change a natural feature of their face, more and more men are seeking plastic surgery. Here are the top five plastic surgeries performed on men in 2017 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons:

Rhinoplasty

Number one on the list, and the most popular male cosmetic surgery for decades, is nose shaping or rhinoplasty. There were 53,393 rhinoplasty surgeries performed on men in the U.S. in 2017, almost a quarter of the total number.

Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty was second on the list for men in 2017, with 32,281 surgeries reported. This accounted for 15% of the total number of eyelid surgeries performed.

Liposuction

Men had 28,180 liposuctions performed in the U.S.; this can include liposuction on the body for shaping or facial/neck fat reduction.

Gynecomastia

Breast reduction surgery or gynecomastia was fourth in popularity with 26,839 surgeries performed on men in the U.S.

Hair Transplantation

Surprisingly, hair transplantation was fifth on the list for cosmetic surgeries for men, with 14,443 procedures performed. However, men accounted for 72% of all hair transplantation surgeries in 2017.

Other plastic surgeries that were high on the list included facelifts, ear surgery and dermabrasion. Men also received over 1.3 minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures in 2017, up 29% over the numbers reported in 2000.

Male cosmetic procedures and plastic surgeries are becoming more popular as men realize the benefits changing their appearance can have on their confidence and self-esteem. If you are considering male plastic surgery, find an experienced plastic surgeon and schedule a consultation to discuss the options available.

5 Tips for Younger Looking Eyes

Have you ever noticed that the one way you can recognize someone you have not seen in decades is by looking at their eyes? Their hair may thin, the body shape fluctuates and the facial structure changes, but the eyes are still the same. The only problem is the skin and tissue around the eyes – that too changes with age. If you want to preserve this important feature and keep your eyes looking youthful, here are five tips for younger looking eyes.

  1. Darken or thicken lashes and brows. Especially for women, thinner brows and eyelashes can make eyes look older. Consider cosmetic treatments and cosmetics that thicken or darken lashes and brows for a more youthful appearance.
  2. Reduce puffiness. Putting cucumber slices or wet tea bags on your eyes can reduce puffiness that make your eyes look tired and older.
  3. Consider Botox. If crow’s feet are appearing around the eyes, talk to a plastic surgeon or med spa about Botox treatments to diminish wrinkles.
  4. Dermal filler injections. Dermal fillers can be used to add volume under the skin around the eyes. This can help reduce eye bags, wrinkles or fill sunken temples, all of which can make your eyes look younger.
  5. Eye lift surgery. If the skin and tissue on the upper or lower lids is sagging, it may require surgery to remove excess skin and lift the lids to a more youthful position.

Do not let your most unique features lose their youthful vitality. Take care of your eyes and use these tips to help them retain their youthful appearance – for cosmetic treatments, seek the care of an experienced facial plastic surgeon that specializes in ocular surgeries and procedures.

How Fat Transfers Can Reduce Facial Aging

One of the reasons the face begins to change as you get older is the loss of volume under the skin. Temples become hollow, lips are thinner, the cheeks are sunken, and the skin can sag. Fat loss and reduction of collagen in the skin can create a skeletal appearance to the face which is equated with old age. Even a facelift does not always hide the skeletal appearance if too much volume is lost. Fat transfers can use fat from your own body to restore a more youthful appearance to the face without invasive surgery.

How Do Facial Fat Transfers Work?

There are many dermal fillers and implants that can add volume to the face, but none ofter the low risk and permanence of fat transfers. In this procedure, fat is removed from another area on the body, usually the abdomen or hip/thigh region through liposuction. The fat is purified to remove excess fluids and then can be injected into the face. Since the fat comes from your own body, there is no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection, which can occur with dermal fillers or implants.

Fat transfer injections can be placed in various areas to combat aging. Common spots that lose fat and increase aging in the face include the temples, checks and lips. When strategically placed by a talented plastic surgeon, fat transfers can help reshape the face and lips, reducing eye bags, wrinkles, a skeletal appearance and other signs of aging.

If you are interested in learning more about how fat transfers can help improve youthfulness in your face, contact a local plastic surgeon that offers this procedure at their clinic.

Reducing the Appearance of Protruding Ears

Anyone who was born with protruding ears and grew up with this condition has most likely heard the taunts and teasing about their ears from others. Children can be cruel, and adults are not much better, giving those with ear deformities nicknames like Dumbo. While protruding ears generally do not impact the health, they can affect the appearance and self-confidence of the individual. Cosmetic surgery can be an option to reduce the appearance of protruding ears, creating a more desirable balance of the ears and face.

Otoplasty or Ear Pinning Surgery

Depending on the type of ear protrusion, different methods of ear pinning or otoplasty can be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. In some cases, all that is needed is a few stitches to pull the ears closer to the head. Other options include shaving excess cartilage to move the ears closer to the head, or otoplasty to reduce the size or change the shape of the ears.

Many parents choose to have plastic surgery performed on their child with protruding ears to protect them from the cruel taunts of their schoolmates. Once the ears are fully formed and grown, usually by age five, ear pinning or otoplasty can be performed. Children can have this procedure done before they start school, allowing them the opportunity to avoid teasing and focus on enjoying their childhood.

For those who have reached their teens years or adulthood with protruding ears, otoplasty is still an option. If you or your child has protruding ears and you want to explore the options available for changing the appearance of the ears, consult an experienced facial plastic surgeon that specializes in otoplasty at their practice.

Are All Deep Plane Facelifts the Same?

One of the most effective procedures to combat aging in the face is a facelift, but results can vary depending on the surgeon and technique used. The old method of only lifting and elevating the skin is rarely used by top-rated facial plastic surgeons. The best results are often obtained through a deep plane facelift, yet even this technique varies from surgeon to surgeon. Not all deep plane facelifts are the same, and the results can depend on the exact method of deep plane lift the surgeon uses.

What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?

In a deep plane facelift, the facial fat and muscles are moved and elevated, not just the skin. The “deep plane” refers to the muscles that are responsible for facial movement, below the top layer of tissue. The skin is elevated slightly, but the key is releasing this deep plane of muscles and ligaments to create the position of a youthful face. This is a very delicate procedure, completed to different levels depending on the expertise of the plastic surgeon.

When completed by an experienced facial surgeon that specializes in the most advanced techniques of deep plane facelifts, the results can be incredible. Not only can it reduce sagging and drooping in the jowls and lower face, it can impact the midface. This can reduce a sunken appearance under the eyes and restore a youthful shape to the cheeks without the need for implants or fat transfers. The results are more natural and can last longer, a desirable effect for those who do not want to look “fake” or like they had plastic surgery.

If you are considering a facelift and want natural, lasting results, consult a facial plastic surgeon that specializes in advanced deep plane facelifts for the best results.

When Is Liposuction a Good Choice?

Reducing size, whether it is around the middle, on the hips or the top of thighs, is a common goal. Losing weight is difficult, but it is even harder to lose it from specific areas. Genetics come into play, and no matter how much you diet or exercise, you can find it almost impossible to create targeted fat loss. Liposuction can be a solution, but it is not for everyone. Here are some tips to determine whether liposuction could help you achieve the body shape you desire.

Are You Overweight?

Liposuction is designed to help reduce fat deposits, but it is not a weight loss solution. Good candidates for liposuction are not necessarily overweight; they have targeted areas that retain fat they want reduced. While it is possible to be overweight and have liposuction, it should not be considered for overall weight loss.

Do You Have a Specific Area You Want Reduced?

If you have love handles that continue to remain after extensive diet and exercise, or saddlebags on the upper thighs that refuse to go away, liposuction may be a good choice. Liposuction is designed to remove fat for a targeted area. Once the fat cells are removed, they are gone for good.

Has Your Shape Changed with Age?

Often as you get older, you may find that the shape of your body and face change. You may suddenly retain fat around the abdomen, upper arms or under the chin. Liposuction can remove spot fat deposits caused by aging, often combined with a lift in the area.

If you are considering liposuction, consult a plastic surgeon who specializes in this procedure to determine if it is the right choice for your needs.

Top 5 Nose Corrections Made with Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty or the “nose job” has been one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries for many decades. For those with damaged or misshapen noses, changing the elements of the nose can help improve balance of the facial features. While each nose job is unique, there are common corrections that are requested by the hundreds of thousands of men and women which receive a rhinoplasty each year. Here are five of the top nose corrections that rhinoplasty can accomplish.

  1. Hump or bump on the bridge. One of the most common issues corrected through a nose job is the removal of a hump or noticeable bump in the bridge. Straightening a crooked bridge is also common.
  2. Wide or flat nose bridge. Often referred to as an Asian nose-job, creating a narrower or higher bridge through rhinoplasty for those with genetically flat or wide bridges is a common procedure.
  3. Reducing a bulbous tip. A round tip of the nose is undesirable by some. Thinning a round or wide tip of the nose is a main concern for many pursuing a nose job.
  4. Hooked, upturned or pointy tip. A nose tip that hooks or droops downward, or a pointy or turned up tip, can be corrected with rhinoplasty, creating a more pleasing shape for the nose.
  5. Reduce overall size of the nose. Reducing a wide, long or large nose is often the goal of rhinoplasty.

Choosing to have a nose job performed is an important, personal decision. But for many, it can be a decision that can positively impact their appearance and self-confidence. If you are considering rhinoplasty, it is critical to find an experienced facial plastic surgeon that specializes in rhinoplasty to ensure you get the best results to correct the shape of your nose.

Does a Nose Fracture Require Plastic Surgery?

A broken nose or a nose fracture are a common injury. Whether it occurs in an auto accident from a blow to the face from an air bag or a ball to the nose when playing your favorite sport, the pain is immediate, and a nose bleed is almost guaranteed. However, many nose fractures are minor and can be remedied with a quick repositioning of the nose to allow it to heal correctly. But when the damage is more substantial, or the “quick repositioning” does not heal correctly, plastic surgery can be an option for repair.

Plastic Surgery for Nose Fractures

There are two reasons that most people consider plastic surgery for a nose fracture. The most serious is impact to the nose structure, affecting breathing and the sinus passages. This is a functional and health issue that should be remedied for the comfort and wellness of the patient. The second is aesthetic concerns. If the nose is crooked or misshapen, it can affect the appearance of the face since the nose is the central feature. Oftentimes, both occur, and plastic surgery can be beneficial for cosmetic and functional purposes.

When correcting a nose fracture, an experienced rhinoplasty or facial reconstruction surgeon can ensure that the nasal passages are open and functional. They can also reshape the nose if the bridge or tip are off-center or no longer aligned. In most cases, both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the surgery can be performed at once and ensure that the patient has restored breathing and an improved appearance.

If you sustain a nose fracture and are concerned about the lasting impact on your breathing function or appearance, see an experienced facial plastic surgeon right away for a consultation.
