What is a Saddle Nose Deformity?

The nose structure is reliant on cartilage and bone to keep its shape for function and appearance. When the cartilage or bone is damaged, the bridge, nasal tip and nasal passages can be altered. If the damage is significant to the septum or other nasal cartilage structures, the nasal bridge can collapse. This is referred to as a saddle nose deformity, a common reason for rhinoplasty or nose reconstruction.

The bridge of the nose runs from between the eyes to the nasal tip. When the structural support is lost, it can sink, causing a deep depression on the lower half of the bridge. From the facial profile, the nose can resemble a horse’s saddle, thus the name “saddle nose deformity.” This is the first symptom of nasal collapse. Other changes to the nose can occur, including a deep horizontal crease across the lower nose where the bridge collapsed and an upturning of the nasal tip. The bridge can look shorter; with the over-rotated nasal tip, this is often called a “pug nose.”

Causes of Saddle Nose Deformities

Saddle nose deformities can occur due to a few different causes, including:

  • Trauma – saddle nose deformities have been called boxer’s nose due to the prevalence in athletes in this sport
  • Infections that cause cartilage damage
  • Diseases that attack cartilage
  • Intranasal illicit drug use or excessive use of nasal sprays

Saddle nose deformities can happen quickly or slowly over time. They can change the look of the nose and face; they can also cause breathing problems.

Repairing saddle nose deformities is possible with surgery, usually requiring cartilage grafting to restore the nasal structure. This is one of the more complex types of rhinoplasty and should only be performed by a facial plastic surgeon with extensive experience with saddle nose deformity repair.

Does Your Teen Want a Nose Job?

Many teens can feel self-conscious of their appearance. It is not uncommon for a teen to be unhappy with a feature on their face, especially their nose. The nose is a central feature that has a significant impact on the overall appearance of the face but changing its shape is a major consideration. If your teenager is unhappy with their nose and wants a nose job, there are many things to consider before seeking this procedure.

First and foremost, it is important that you and your teen have a frank and honest conversation about why they want rhinoplasty. There are many people who were unhappy with a facial feature in their teens but as adults accept these features are part of their unique appearance. Any surgery does come with risks and it is important to understand why your teen wants this procedure. If you believe it will help them become more confident or their nose is misshapen, it may be the right choice

When Can Teen Rhinoplasty be Performed?

In addition to determining whether a nose job is right for your teenager, it is also important to understand when it can be performed. The nose must be fully developed before surgical changes are made. In girls, this could be as early as 13-14 years of age, while for boys it may be at least 15. Each person develops and grows at different rates. An experienced plastic surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty can help determine whether your teen is old enough to have a nose job performed.

Teen rhinoplasty and all surgeries should be carefully considered. It is a life-changing operation which can have benefits but also has risks. Make sure to take the time to discuss all the implications and consult a reputable plastic surgeon before making a decision that will have such an impact on your teen’s life and appearance.

Do I Need Plastic Surgery for a Nose Fracture?

A basketball to the face or impact in an auto accident can cause a nose fracture. Many broken noses do not require medical attention or surgery. While painful, a small crack in one of the nasal bones will not necessarily impact breathing, the sinuses or look of the nose. However, when more serious fractures occur, the nose can be altered in shape. If not quickly corrected, you’ll be stuck with a misshaped nose. Surgery for a nasal fracture repair may be needed to return your nose to the desired shape.

When a nose fracture occurs, you can reset the bones within the first two weeks in some cases. If one of the bones has just shifted, a plastic surgeon or other doctor can move the bone back into place. Adjusting the bones and securing them in place while they heal can restore the shape of the nose. However, some broken noses may require rhinoplasty to fix. The bones must completely heal, then surgery can be used to reshape the nose.

Rhinoplasty for a Broken Nose

If you are left with a crooked or crushed nose after an accident, rhinoplasty may be needed to change the shape. This can be an opportunity to not only restore your nose but improve on the shape. If you have always wanted to lose the hump on your bridge or change the tip, this is your opportunity. Plus, nose work can open sinuses and help with breathing issues caused by the fracture accident.

A fracture of the nose can alter your appearance if the bones are out of place. Seek the assistance of a facial plastic surgeon that specializes in rhinoplasty to restore the beauty of your nose.

Top 5 Nose Corrections Made with Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty or the “nose job” has been one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries for many decades. For those with damaged or misshapen noses, changing the elements of the nose can help improve balance of the facial features. While each nose job is unique, there are common corrections that are requested by the hundreds of thousands of men and women which receive a rhinoplasty each year. Here are five of the top nose corrections that rhinoplasty can accomplish.

  1. Hump or bump on the bridge. One of the most common issues corrected through a nose job is the removal of a hump or noticeable bump in the bridge. Straightening a crooked bridge is also common.
  2. Wide or flat nose bridge. Often referred to as an Asian nose-job, creating a narrower or higher bridge through rhinoplasty for those with genetically flat or wide bridges is a common procedure.
  3. Reducing a bulbous tip. A round tip of the nose is undesirable by some. Thinning a round or wide tip of the nose is a main concern for many pursuing a nose job.
  4. Hooked, upturned or pointy tip. A nose tip that hooks or droops downward, or a pointy or turned up tip, can be corrected with rhinoplasty, creating a more pleasing shape for the nose.
  5. Reduce overall size of the nose. Reducing a wide, long or large nose is often the goal of rhinoplasty.

Choosing to have a nose job performed is an important, personal decision. But for many, it can be a decision that can positively impact their appearance and self-confidence. If you are considering rhinoplasty, it is critical to find an experienced facial plastic surgeon that specializes in rhinoplasty to ensure you get the best results to correct the shape of your nose.

Does a Nose Fracture Require Plastic Surgery?

A broken nose or a nose fracture are a common injury. Whether it occurs in an auto accident from a blow to the face from an air bag or a ball to the nose when playing your favorite sport, the pain is immediate, and a nose bleed is almost guaranteed. However, many nose fractures are minor and can be remedied with a quick repositioning of the nose to allow it to heal correctly. But when the damage is more substantial, or the “quick repositioning” does not heal correctly, plastic surgery can be an option for repair.

Plastic Surgery for Nose Fractures

There are two reasons that most people consider plastic surgery for a nose fracture. The most serious is impact to the nose structure, affecting breathing and the sinus passages. This is a functional and health issue that should be remedied for the comfort and wellness of the patient. The second is aesthetic concerns. If the nose is crooked or misshapen, it can affect the appearance of the face since the nose is the central feature. Oftentimes, both occur, and plastic surgery can be beneficial for cosmetic and functional purposes.

When correcting a nose fracture, an experienced rhinoplasty or facial reconstruction surgeon can ensure that the nasal passages are open and functional. They can also reshape the nose if the bridge or tip are off-center or no longer aligned. In most cases, both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the surgery can be performed at once and ensure that the patient has restored breathing and an improved appearance.

If you sustain a nose fracture and are concerned about the lasting impact on your breathing function or appearance, see an experienced facial plastic surgeon right away for a consultation.

Is Teen Rhinoplasty Safe?

When it comes to teen plastic surgery, rhinoplasty or the “nose Job” is the procedure most requested. Teens are notoriously self-conscious of their appearance, and living with a nose that is unappealing may seem like a tough cross to bear. However, rhinoplasty is a complicated surgery and involves transforming a crucial element of the face. The question is, when is it safe for teens to have rhinoplasty?

Factors to Consider with Teen Rhinoplasty

All teens mature at different rates. Some girls may be their full adult height at 15, while some boys may continue sprouting up until they are 18 and beyond. Emotional maturity also varies, and both physical and emotional maturity should be considered when determining whether a teen is ready for rhinoplasty, along with other factors:

  • Physical changes. The face continues to grow and change during the teen years. It is important to ensure that rhinoplasty will not impact the growth centers within the face. Plus, if the face changes, the nose may look out of place when they are adults.
  • Emotional readiness. It is common for a teenager to dislike a feature on their face or body, then embrace it as part of their uniqueness later in life. It is important to ensure this is not just a passing phase.
  • Sports and injury. Rhinoplasty does require downtime to heal, and may require teens avoid certain activities like contact sports for several weeks to avoid injury.

While there is not one set age that is safe for teen rhinoplasty, most teenagers can have rhinoplasty by the age of 16. However, it is important to discuss all the factors with an experienced plastic surgeon to ensure it is the right time or procedure for the individual.

Benefits of Male Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty or the “nose job” is a popular plastic surgery for men. Although women are more likely to have plastic surgery, more men are undergoing surgical options to improve their appearance. Rhinoplasty is one of the top cosmetic surgeries for men – having a drastic impact on their overall appearance. Here are some of the benefits of rhinoplasty for men.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most impactful facial changes that can be made through surgery. The nose is the center of the facial features, but it should not detract from the eyes, mouth or rest of the face. Nose surgery can ensure that all the features blend together for symmetry and balance, without the nose overpowering or causing distraction.

For most men, rhinoplasty has slightly different goals than for women. Women may want a smaller or more delicate nose, but that is not always the case with men. Men may want a nose that is more masculine or pronounced to fit into their features. If they do want a reduction of a nasal hump or drooping nasal tip, they still want to retain a strong masculine nose. Many men only want a crooked or broken nose fixed, without a change in size or overall shape.

A well-shaped nose can benefit the attractiveness for a man. Correcting imperfections can help blend this important feature into the face, while defining the nose can make the chin and jawline more prominent for a masculine appearance that is often desired by men.

Transforming the nose can boost the self-esteem and confidence of many men who are unhappy with their appearance. Choosing an experienced plastic surgeon that specializes in rhinoplasty can ensure that the surgery corrects issues while keeping the overall facial features in balance.

5 Common Reasons for Rhinoplasty

In 2015, an estimated 138,258 rhinoplasty surgeries were completed in the U.S. Nose shaping surgery has been one of the top plastic surgeries performed for decades, in the top 5 cosmetic surgeries for men. While many may think rhinoplasty is for those who want a smaller nose, this is only one of the reasons men and women have this surgery performed. Here are 5 common reasons people choose to undergo rhinoplasty to improve their appearance or health.

  1. Crooked nose. A break in the cartilage of the nose is common from injury, causing a crooked or imbalanced nose. Rhinoplasty can straighten and repair a crooked nose after injury and improve breathing capabilities.
  2. Too large. Reducing the size of the nose is one of the top reasons people choose rhinoplasty, but certainly not the only one.
  3. Wide nose. Large nostrils or a wide base is another reason men and women seek to have their nose reshaped through cosmetic surgery.
  4. Hump or bulge. A hump on the bridge of the nose or a bulbous tip are other shape issues that can be resolved through rhinoplasty.
  5. Nose augmentation. Not everyone wants to reduce the size of their nose. Some augmentation procedures for the nose include adding depth to the bridge or lengthening the tip. These are common in ethnic or Asian rhinoplasty, where the nose is smaller and flatter and the patient wants a more pronounced nose structure.

When undergoing rhinoplasty, it is crucial to find a plastic surgeon that has extensive experience and proven results performing this delicate procedure. If you are considering rhinoplasty, check credentials and testimonials of your plastic surgeon to ensure you choose a qualified and talented surgeon.

5 Facts About Rhinoplasty

One of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures for both men and women is the nose job or rhinoplasty. Since the nose is the focal point of the face, it can both enhance and detract from the appearance of the face. A small adjustment to the shape or size of the nose can have a dramatic effect. Here are five facts that you may not have known about this popular cosmetic surgery.

  1. Skin and cartilage grafts are common. To reshape the nose, surgeons often use cartilage and skin from other areas of the body. There is less chance of rejection of the implant when it is tissue from the same person. ‘Plastic’ is not used- the term ‘plastic surgery’ refers to reshaping the body, not adding the material into the body.
  2. Rhinoplasty is not a new procedure. As far back as 500 BC, there are writings describing nose procedures that use some of the same techniques that are used today. Of course, these surgeries were solely for fixing a nose that was deformed or injured, not as a cosmetic procedure.
  3. Appearance is only one reason for rhinoplasty. Although appearance is one of the most common reasons people choose to have a ‘nose job’, it is not the only reason. There are medical reasons to change the shape of the nose, as well as repair it from injury.
  4. Rhinoplasty ranks in the top five cosmetic procedures. Consistently, rhinoplasty is one of the top five cosmetic surgeries in the U.S., along with breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tucks and eyelid surgery.
  5. Every nose and face is different. Rhinoplasty is one of the most artistic cosmetic procedures there is, requiring a very careful reshaping to fit the face of the individual. If you are considering rhinoplasty, you want an experienced cosmetic surgeon that specializes in this procedure.
