Modern-day Laser Hair Removal Safe for All Skin Colors

Laser hair removal is a FDA-approved, medically safe procedure that involves applying a laser beam to a specific area of the skin to reduce and eventually eliminate unwanted hair growth in that area.  Laser hair removal works through the science of selective photothermolys is whereby light of a single, specific wavelength is used to selectively heat the dark pigment (melanin) in hair follicles, thereby permanently destroying the hair-producing mechanism of those follicles.

Although both hair and skin contain melanin, they absorb laser energy at different rates. By manipulating the wavelength of the laser light, laser technicians can target only the hair while leaving the surrounding skin relatively untouched. However, the darker a person’s skin―i.e.the more melanin a person’s skin contains― the more responsive the skin is to the laser light, increasing the risk of burning and skin discoloration (either lightening of the skin or hyperpigmentation.)

This is why, traditionally, laser hair removal has been described as best suited for people with dark hair and light skin. For the same reason, laser hair removal was usually not recommended for use on sun-tanned skin.

Fortunately, newer methods and lasers have been developed which have significantly increased both the effectiveness and safety of laser hair removal for darker-complexioned people. Using a long-pulsed laser with a longer light wavelength and an integrated cooling device (e.g. a cooling tip) drastically reduces the risk of injury to dark skin, as does the application of a cooling gel or spray.

Additionally, special skin creams can be used following laser treatment to facilitate skin rejuvenation and minimize pigmentation changes. Many of the new laser devices allow laser operators to objectively measure a patient’s melanin index and choose the treatment setting accordingly. This allows for a more precise application of laser energy and better treatment outcomes for patients.

Remember, an experienced practitioner will know exactly what kind of hair removal system and laser setting to use for your skin type. By choosing a reputable plastic surgeon who has experience treating your skin tone, you can improve your laser hair removal outcome and safeguard the health of your skin.
