Top 5 Reconstructive Plastic Surgeries

Plastic surgeons are not just for facelifts and liposuction. Their skills can be used for vital reconstruction due to deformities, trauma, cancer and other maladies. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons compiles a statistic report each year on the top procedures completed in the field, including the top reconstructive plastic surgeries. Here the top five surgeries completed in 2016 for patients needing reconstructive work.

  1. Tumor removal. By far, removing tumors is the most frequently performed reconstructive surgery. This includes skin cancer tumors and many other types of benign and malignant tumors on the body, with over 4.4 million plastic surgery procedures completed in 2016.
  2. Laceration repair. Carefully repairing lacerations (not facial) accounted for 253,361 reconstructive plastic surgeries. Deep lacerations require the experience of a plastic surgeon to repair the tissue and reduce deformation.
  3. Maxillofacial surgery. 202,688 surgeries were performed to repair head, jaw or face maladies. Reconstructing broken facial bones due to trauma and correcting birth defects on the face/head fall into this category.
  4. Scar revision. Any laceration, burn or trauma to the skin can leave a scar, some that can be disfiguring. 181,190 reconstructive surgeries were completed for scar revision in 2016.
  5. Hand surgery. The hands are very complex and can need the expertise of a plastic surgeon when reconstruction is necessary. 135,250 plastic surgeries were performed in 2016 for hand reconstruction.

If you or a family member are in need on reconstructive surgery, choose a plastic surgeon that specializes in this field for the best results. For facial issues, you will want a facial plastic surgeon that has extensive experience in reconstructive surgery to ensure the procedure is performed exceptionally.

Facial Scar Revision

If you have facial scarring that you would like to have treated, you should know that today’s facial plastic surgeons have a variety of facial scar revision tools and procedures available to help you.

Perhaps you were injured in an accident, or you have scars from acne, disease, burns, or surgical intervention.  You may have been hesitant to make an appointment  or a scar revision because you think that having a scar revision is frivolous, but it has been shown that unsightly facial scars can substantially reduce a person’s self esteem and confidence level.

An unsightly scar does not just affect how you look, it affects your mental health by negatively impacting how you believe others view you.  This affects how you interact with other people and can result in poor interpersonal and professional relationships.

In addition, facial scars can interfere with the ability to form facial expressions and sometimes impair the functioning of facial features such as the lips, eyes, eyelids, nose and brows.

Scar tissue forms naturally as the skin heals from an injury or trauma.  Scars differ depending on the extent of the injury, the location, age of the patient, and the nature of the treatment of the wound.  The appropriate treatment differs depending on the nature and unique characteristics of the scar.  Treatments include dermabrasion, laser therapy, Z-Plasty, W-Plasty, excision, geometric broken line closure and skin grafts.

Your facial plastic surgeon will be happy to discuss various procedures for reducing or minimizing the visibility of scar tissue.  While most patients are advised to wait 12 months from the date of an injury to seek a scar revision, you should schedule an initial consultation with your plastic surgeon as soon as possible after an injury.  In some cases, immediate intervention is needed to minimize future effects of scarring.
